What is morphine?

Morphine is considered to be a pain medication from the family of opiates which is found naturally in a number of plants and animals and human.

Morphine work is to act upon the central nervous system thereby decreasing the pain. It is being taken for treatment of both acute pain plus also for chronic pain.

Morphine generic

Morphine is a member of opiates family and it do belongs to the group of medicines called narcotic analgesics ( pain medicines). It do acts on the central nervous system ( CNS) in order to relieve the pain of the body.

The medication of morphine is available in form of both extended release capsules and immediate release. It should not be used for short time such as recovering from surgery.

Morphine dosage

The medication of morphine is being available in form of tablets, oral solution and even in injection form too. The strength of these tablets are in form of 15 mg, 30 mg, 60 mg, 100 mg and 200 mg.

For tablets

The patient should take the initial dose of 15 to 30 mg orally every 4 hours as and when needed to manage the pain.

For oral solution

The patient should take 10 to 20 mg orally every 4 hours as needed to manage the pain.

 

The medication of morphine should be avoided by the patients suffering from following conditions:-

  • Severe asthma or breathing problems
  • Blockage in stomach or intestines
  • Bowel obstruction which is known as paralytic ileus.
  • Should not be used by pregnant ladies

What is morphine used for?

Morphine is primarily being used for the treatment of both acute and chronic severe pain. It is also being majorly used for pain due to myocardial infarction and also for labor pain. It is also being traditionally used for treatment of acute pulmonary edema.

How long does morphine do stays in the system?

It takes around 60 minutes for the medication morphine to reach the bloodstream after it has been taken orally.  It takes around four to six hours for morphine to start wearing off. If the extended release formulation is being taken upon the effects shall last upto eight to 12 hours.

Morphine withdrawal symptoms

Suddenly stopping the intake of medication could be quite harmful for the health of the patient. Plus intake of alcohol could adversely affect the situation. Below are withdrawal symptoms of morphine :-

  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting
  • Restlessness
  • Craving for the drug

Morphine side effects

Morphine could lead to serious consequences if it is used in wrong manner. Below are certain side effects of morphine :-

  • Seizures
  • Slowed breathing
  • Long pauses between breaths
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Irregular mensuration
  • Decreased sexual activity

Morphine abuse

Abuse of any medication refers to the state when it is being taken without the consultation of the doctor. It has the high potential to be highly addictive as tolerance to it develops rapidly.
